Q ~ What do I bring on the first day of classes?
A ~ If you are registered in our Academic Program your child will need to bring their own backpack, a pair of indoor shoes, and a bagged lunch. Grade 9 students will also be required to have a Ti-83 calculator for Math.
Q ~ How do you handle misbehavior in the classroom? Will I be contacted if my child is misbehaving in class?
A ~ Our team strives to create a classroom environment at Step Ahead where students clearly understand the expectations for conduct, and what they themselves can expect from each day. Students are encouraged in positive ways to participate and to maintain respectful behavior with our proactive approach. It is unlikely a parent would need to be contacted during classroom time. However, Step Ahead strives to keep open communication with parents at all times, so if there are areas of concern, these will be communicated to the parent at an appropriate time so that we can work together to discover a solution.
Q ~ If I am enrolled in the academic program, are there any costs involved?
A. There is a one-time registration fee of $250 per student (up to a maximum of $500 per family).

Registration fees are non-refundable upon acceptance into the program. If for any reason we cannot accommodate your child, your registration fee will be returned to you.

There are no other costs! Step Ahead is happy to include all other expenses such as supplies within the program.

Q ~ Are there any restrictions on what I can send with my child for lunch (ie: peanut butter)?
A ~ No, there are no restrictions on what you can send with your child for lunch. Step Ahead rents a public facility so we are not able to maintain a peanut-free facility or guarantee the absence of any specific foods.

Q ~ Can you accommodate for my child's special needs?
A ~ Step Ahead may be able to accommodate for some mild special needs, however, we are very limited in supports that can often be found elsewhere. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation to determine if Step Ahead is the right fit for your child.

Q ~ Can my child bring their iPad to type or phone?
A ~ Step Ahead has a “no student electronics” policy. This is done to support our mission of maintaining a consistently healthy learning environment for all students. Students are welcome to use electronics at home for their homework assignments, but are required to leave electronics at home during class time. Students may contact their parent at any time using a teacher or team member phone

Q ~ What if I don't feel confident teaching my child at home?

A ~ If parents are needing any assistance and further support at home, parents are able to book an appointment with the teacher Tuesdays 3:45- 5:00 and Wednesdays 3:45-5:00 to discuss solutions.

Q ~ Will my child be doing tests?

A ~ In the academic program, students will have some tests throughout the year. The tests will be sent home to complete and be returned to the Step Ahead teacher on the due date assigned. Provincial achievement tests (finals [grade 6 and 9]) are the only exception as they must be supervised by a teacher.

Q ~ Can our family go on holidays during school days? How will this affect my child academically?

A ~ Yes, families are welcome to enjoy their holidays! Parents will have a homework schedule to follow so they may know what they have missed. Families are required to ensure their child's assessments are handed in on time but arrangements can always be made with the teacher prior to your holiday.

Q ~ What makes Step Ahead a Christian program?

A ~ Step Ahead's team consist of ladies who are called by Christ Jesus to be good stewards with the gift of this program. We are committed to continuing to learn, grow, and work towards excellence with each passing year. Our attitudes towards the children exemplify Christ's love. Jesus is the center of all that we do. Ms. Veitch begins the day by welcoming God into the classroom, teaching God's love and solid Biblical principles that encourage good character. Step Ahead offers a welcoming atmosphere for prayer, and praise towards God. We honor each and every child's unique call and purpose. Our goal is to help support each child to come to know their purpose, fulfill their destiny, and live an abundant life in Christ Jesus!
